A common theme in any relationship is communication and quality times together. When it comes to families and the parent child relationship it is no difference. Communication is the bread and butter of the relationships. Everyone knows families are always on the go. Rather they are on the go for church events, sport activities, community events, or they are just running errands the old fashioned way—- always moving. Who have time for family quality times? It is important to invest time into family. Here are three things you can do today to increase communication and grow a healthy family.
Dinner together as family. Sitting down to a dinner every night increase positive interactions. Reviewing each family day and schedule gives the opportunity to learn what is going on in the children’s life. During family dinner all electronics should be put away; that includes parents as well. Family dinner is a sacred and respected time within the family and needs to be treated as such. Conversations during this time are positive but not a time to discuss why someone was suspended at school or to implement a consequence.
Family Project– engage in a family project. A family project is an activity in which a family participate in together to complete a task. Family projects can including cooking dinner together. Divide the recipe among each family members or into groups (boys on one team and girls on the other). The meal will take team work to complete—- one person may be in charge of cutting the onions and another can be in charge of making a side. The key is everyone is in the kitchen at the same time. Other projects could include planting a tree or a vegetable garden. One year, our family project was to build, paint, and design a doll house. This was fun because it gave everyone in the house an opportunity to put in their input while spending quality time together.
Exercising– take a walk around the neighborhood. Plan an obstacle course in the backyard. Gather balls, Hulu hoops, mats, and other creative objects to create a family obstacle course. Play family kick ball. These are opportunities to spend quality and memorable family time together.
Spending quality family time is key to keeping families healthy. Spending time together two to three times a week can increase communication and positive interactions between families. It could also decrease negative behaviors issues and increase positive behaviors. A lot of time is not needed just quality time is all it takes to make the steps to growing a healthy family.
